10 Stubborn Habits of Unemployed People

10 Stubborn Habits of Unemployed People

As per the 2009 survey conducted by ‘CareerBuilder’, the largest online job portal, 47 percent of employers agreed that finding qualified candidates is their biggest hiring challenge. They also said that eligible job seekers having qualities like multitasking, initiative and creative problem-solving could more likely be hired.

The situation is still the same in the job market even after 4 years. Employers are looking for only robust and qualified candidates, and the vacancies are limited. As a result, only a few candidates succeed, but many ambitious job candidates get filtered out in the interviews. Aside from this, it’s also studied during the CareerBuilder survey that a majority of jobless candidates get rejected in the interviews because of the following bad characteristics. Here we have pinpointed 10 such characteristics or habits of jobless or rejected candidates.

Lying

As a job seeker you must learn to not lie. When you’re in front of the interviewer, you should not forget the fact that s/he knows everything. What you try to hide or lie is often caught by the interviewer right on the spot. So maintain clarity and truthfulness while designing your resume, and cover letter.

If you believe in past data, CareerBuilder conducted a survey back in 2008 which revealed, 49 percent of hiring managers caught a candidate lying on his or her resume. Unfortunately, it happens so often and has turned into a habit of most unemployed candidates, which is of course a dangerous trait.

Telling Negatives

Many candidates have a tendency of complaining about their present or previous employer during interviews, which, in turn, makes the interviewer dismiss them. You cannot tell negatives about your employer even if s/he is rude. Rather, you need to find out a way of explaining the negative things as positives, or at least impartial statements. You could say, for example, your current job does not allow you to feel like a part of the project team, so you do not like it.

Not Showing Long-term Potential

All employers want the shortlisted candidates to work for the company in a long-term basis. You need to understand this fact while answering the interview questions. Suppose the interviewer might asks you something like “Where you see yourself in 5 years?” You should not answer anything that would not have any connection with your position and work responsibility. To overcome this bad habit you need to answer in a way such that the employer would believe you’re conscious about you and your company’s future.

Having Digital Dirt

Digital dirt refers to your activities social networking sites which are bad and unpleasant. Today, all employers tend to check the online activities of a potential candidate and decide whether he or she is a good suit or not. If you’ve added photos or contents which are found to be unscrupulous, you might be fired from the interview.

Not Knowing About the Company

Cases are there when candidates go for the interview without prior knowledge about the company, and the position. Many employers are out there telling that candidates are not able to tell about the company they’re being interviewed for. It costs them the job offer in majority of those cases.

Not Looking Enthusiastic

All the interviewer wants from the job applicants is they should have enthusiasm, passion and strong interest to work in the company. As an interviewee you need to ask a couple of good questions relevant to your profile and your company’s future. This lets the hiring person understand that you are enthusiastic and passionate. Of course, you need to prepare what questions you would ask when you are given the chance.

Being Too Much Personal

It’s disgusting when candidates tend to become too much personal with the employer during the interview. In such cases they talk about their personal stuff, hobbies, religion, race etc. which are surely none of the interviewer’s business.

Talking About Salary

Candidates are often advised to not talk about salary unless you are asked to do so. The employer will definitely give you a chance to tell your salary expectation, so hold on. Once you got the chance you can negotiate freely, but it’s a bad habit of certain candidates who initiate the salary topic and end up bothering the employer.

Not Providing Specific Examples

Many employers and career counselors are out there who suggest the job seekers to give practical evidence of their accomplishments. The more you quantify your work, the better it is. As a potential hire you need to prove that you can be a valuable asset for the company.

Failing to Prove Experience

What’s the point of mentioning your previous experience on your resume or cover letter if you cannot show it? You need to understand that managers don’t have enough time to train new employees since they have to go through hectic schedules till the completion of projects. This is why experienced candidates are often preferred over fresh hires, and in case you’re a fresher, your training will be very fast. So make sure you are confident enough to show and implement your previous work experiences in potential job.
